Typical signs and symptoms
NETs are often very small and slow-growing. They can occur almost anywhere in the body, and depending on where they are, they can produce a wide variety of symptoms or, in some cases, no signs or symptoms at all.
The symptoms can be vague (for example, extreme tiredness) or similar to other disorders that occur within the primary site of the tumor. For example, NETs in the digestive tract may cause symptoms such as diarrhea, weight loss, nausea or vomiting that mimic common digestive disorders.
Some NETs release hormones, which can cause a number of symptoms depending on the type of hormone. The NET is called “functional” when there is an overproduction of hormones causing symptoms, while a “nonfunctional” NET does not produce extra hormones. However, a nonfunctional NET may still cause symptoms if it blocks crucial organs due to its size and/or location.

The symptoms listed above are the most common. However, every patient is unique and you may experience different symptoms than other patients. Ask your doctor for advice and help with symptom relief if you are experiencing any symptoms affecting your quality of life.
