Follow-up after treatment
Many diagnostic tests initially used to detect NETs are also used to closely monitor them and check if treatments are working or if the disease is progressing. Most patients will inevitably experience progression during their NET journey1, which means the tumor will grow or new tumors will appear in other body parts. It is essential to inform your doctor if you notice any changes or experience any new symptoms because they might mean the disease is progressing. Routine follow-up tests can help your doctor detect any changes, even without symptoms.
Scans help doctors to identify progression, since they can measure the size of tumors and determine whether or how much the tumors have grown compared to the initial scans. Some scans can detect if new tumors have developed in other parts of the body. Laboratory tests, including urine and blood tests, may also be used with scans to measure hormone levels associated with tumor growth.
Results from these periodic follow-up tests will help your doctors determine if your medication needs to be adjusted or if you should try alternative treatment options.
